Nitro Rallycross: What You Need to Know

By Charley Daniels | Aug. 8, 2019

In 2018, rallycross got the Nitro World Games treatment, spearheaded by action sports legend Travis Pastrana. The idea was to turn the sport of rallycross on its head and create a course that puts the race back in the drivers’ hands, has multiple racing lines, and some of the biggest jumps and berms ever seen on a rallycross track.

Nitro Rallycross is returning to Utah Motorsports Campus this year. Click here for more info and tickets.

What Is Nitro Rallycross?

Pastrana said it best when we asked him this question before the inaugural event last year: “Big jumps. Big banked turns. More dirt sections. More sliding and passing opportunities. All made possible because of the permanent track, which allows us testing time to dial it all in,” he said, adding: “Typical rallycross is fun. But Nitro Rallycross is going to take the sport to another level of excitement for the drivers and our fans.”

Athletes to Watch This Year

Timmy Hansen will be back to defend his title after a close race last year. In fact, many of the same elite drivers are coming back to challenge for the podium. The list of confirmed drivers is absolutely stacked with big names from rallycross, including: Scott Speed, Patrick Sandell, Chris Atkinson, Steve Arpin, Ken Block, Kevin Hansen, Tanner Foust, and of course Travis Pastrana.

Speed and Foust will enter the competition separated by only five points for the lead in the Americas Rallycross Supercar Championship standings, with Speed clinging to the lead after Foust topped the podium at last Sunday’s Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. Sandell and Arpin are also in the ARX top 5.

With a lineup like this, only one thing is guaranteed: This event is going to be absolute mayhem, and anyone could win.
